Google Develops Prototype Cell Phone

The Wall Street Journal has confirmed our recent story that Google will launch a cell phone within a year. Google has developed a cell phone prototype to ultimately give away free cell phones and service to subscribers. The future Google cell phone will be bundled with advertisements from its search engine, e-mail and Web browser software applications. This is a major threat to existing carriers like Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

Google has showed the prototype to various cell phone manufacturers and network operators as it continues to develop the technical specifications that will allow the phone to offer a better mobile Web browsing experience than current products, the story said.

Google would be the second company outside of the cell phone industry to launch a cell phone. Apple recently launched the highly anticipated iPhone. Google however, would be generating revenues from advertising dollars instead of an expensive handset like the iPhone and a $60 per month subscription.

Although Google's main business is Internet advertising, the company is slowly evolving into an advertising company within different advertising avenues. Now you can purchase radio and print ads on Google's Adwords service. The company has been aggressively pursing advertising in the mobile phone market. Google recently announced it has plans to spend at least $4.6 billion for the wireless spectrum if the FCC met its conditions. The FCC has met most of Google's conditions and it's still unclear as to Google's next step.
